Mustangs prepare for new season under new leadership

Mustangs Men’s Basketball gets ready for a new season under new leadership. Last season, the Mustangs finished 12-9 overall last season. Head Coach Doug Ginn took over the program over the summer. Ginn has coached for 25 years, in a variety of High School levels. He has also coached at different capacities in seven state championships.

The Mustangs’ first game will be on the 28th at Ascend Leadership Academy. Their home opener will be on the 1st.

With new leadership comes learning new plays. That’s one thing the Mustangs have been working on during the preseason. “we are in the beginning stages of learning new defensive and offensive schemes,” said Ginn. The Mustangs workouts numbers were low, but several football players returned to the gym yesterday.

“We would only average between 8 to 10 players. Our tryouts also had relatively small numbers due to a large number of our athletes who also play football. We are expecting between 10 to 12 more kids to join us,” said Ginn.

Joshua Kennedy, Austin Patterson, Colby Pennington, and Michael Copeland are all returning varsity players. “They too are learning a new system, which takes time,” said Ginn. “Juniors Brady Preslar and Dawson Futrell have worked hard in the preseason and should be ready to make significant contributions.”

“I have high expectations for all of my teams and players, but I know we are in a tough conference. My hope is that we learn to play hard and smart so that we compete with everyone on our schedule. If we defend like we are capable, then we should be able to make a deep run in the playoffs,” said Ginn.
