Weekly Recap: Aug. 17-22
Another busy week of fall sports is in the books across Moore County, with volleyball, soccer, football, golf and cross country all taking center stage.
North Moore
The North Moore volleyball team had a tough week, dropping both of its matches.
The Mustangs opened the week Monday with a five-set loss to Wheatmore, 3-2, dropping their overall record to 1-2. North Moore returned to the court Wednesday at Providence Grove, falling 3-1. The Mustangs won the third set 25-21 after dropping the first two 25-12 and 25-12, but Providence Grove closed out the match with a 25-14 fourth-set win.
On the football field, North Moore opened its season Thursday night at home against Fike. The Mustangs struggled from the opening kickoff as Fike rolled to an 80-0 victory.
Union Pines
Union Pines had a strong week across several sports.
The Vikings volleyball team picked up a convincing 3-0 win over Montgomery Central on Tuesday, winning 25-8, 25-10 and 25-4.
Wednesday brought one of the best volleyball matches of the week when Union Pines hosted rival Pinecrest. The Vikings pushed the Patriots to five sets before falling 3-2. Union Pines won the second and third sets, 25-23 and 25-22, before Pinecrest battled back to take the final two sets.
Union Pines bounced back Thursday with a 3-0 road win over Overhills, 25-23, 25-17 and 25-20, moving the Vikings to 2-2 overall.
On the golf course Thursday, Union Pines finished first at Asheboro Municipal with a team score of 144. Central Davidson finished second with a 149, followed by Southwestern Randolph at 164 and Providence Grove at 168.
Football season also started on a positive note for the Vikings. Union Pines defeated Westover 27-13 Thursday night to open the year with a win.
Union Pines cross country competed Saturday at South View. Joseph Skogen led the way for the Viking boys, winning the boys 5,000-meter race with a time of 17:58.19.
The Union Pines girls finished ninth in the team standings with scoring positions of 23, 27, 58, 71 and 73. The Vikings averaged 26:36 with a spread of 3:12.
Pinecrest
Pinecrest soccer started the week with a dominant performance Monday, defeating Western Harnett 9-0 and moving to 1-1 overall.
The Patriots volleyball team remained unbeaten Monday with a straight-set win over Chapel Hill, 25-15, 25-20 and 25-11.
Pinecrest then traveled across the county Wednesday for a rivalry matchup against Union Pines. The Patriots were pushed to five sets but came away with the 3-2 victory. After falling behind two sets to one, Pinecrest won the fourth set 25-18 and captured the deciding fifth set 15-12.
On the football field, Pinecrest opened its season Thursday night on the road against Cleveland in one of the most exciting games of the week.
The Patriots battled back after trailing by 20 points and forced overtime late in the fourth quarter. Pinecrest scored first in overtime, but a disrupted extra-point attempt left the Patriots without the conversion. Cleveland answered with a touchdown and extra point to escape with a 41-40 overtime victory.
Pinecrest cross country competed at the South Mecklenburg Invitational over the weekend.
The Patriot boys finished third in the 5,000-meter team standings with 152 points. Pinecrest's scoring runners finished 20th, 25th, 28th, 33rd and 46th, averaging 17:10 with just a 32-second spread.
The Pinecrest girls finished 11th with 277 points. Their scoring runners finished 33rd, 46th, 72nd and 77th, with an average time of 21:52.
Sandhills Classical Christian
Sandhills Classical Christian had a successful week in volleyball.
The Lions swept O'Neal 3-0 Tuesday to improve to 2-2 before defeating Sandhills Homeschool 3-1 Thursday, moving to 3-2 overall.
In boys soccer, Sandhills Classical fell to O'Neal 8-2 Tuesday.
The biggest moment of the week came Friday night when the Lions hosted crosstown rival Father Capodanno in eight-man football.
Sandhills Classical came away with a 44-30 victory, starting its football season 1-0.
O'Neal
The O'Neal boys soccer team started its season with two wins.
The Falcons defeated Sandhills Classical Christian 8-2 Tuesday before traveling to Lee Christian Thursday and earning a 6-4 victory to improve to 2-0.
O'Neal volleyball dropped both of its matches during the week. The Falcons fell 3-0 against Sandhills Classical and 3-0 at Lee Christian, moving to 0-2.
The Falcons tennis team also competed Tuesday at Burlington Christian, falling 7-2 and moving to 1-1 overall.
Father Capodanno
Father Capodanno took the short trip to Sandhills Classical Christian Friday night for a crosstown eight-man football matchup.
The Grunts battled the Lions but came up short in a 44-30 loss, moving to 0-2 overall.
With another full week complete, Moore County's fall sports season is quickly getting into full swing. Rivalry matches, football openers and strong individual performances highlighted the week as teams now turn their attention to the final week of August.
