Weekly Sports Wrap-Up

The first full week of fall sports is in the books across Moore County, with soccer, volleyball, football, golf and cross country all getting underway.

North Moore

North Moore soccer opened the week Monday on the road against Ascend Leadership Academy. The Mustangs battled to a 2-2 tie, starting their season 0-0-1. CPx

The Mustangs returned to the pitch Wednesday at Central Carolina Academy and picked up their first win of the season, defeating the Eagles 5-2 to improve to 1-0-1. CP

North Moore volleyball also opened its season Wednesday, traveling to Montgomery Central and coming away with a 3-0 sweep. CP

The Mustangs were back on the court Thursday at Providence Grove, where they suffered their first loss of the season, falling 3-0. CP

North Moore football got its first taste of action Friday night at the Moore County Kickoff Classic against Western Harnett. The Mustangs faced a bigger Eagles team and made a late comeback attempt before falling just short, 8-6. CP

Union Pines

Union Pines soccer opened its season Tuesday on the road at Scotland and came home with a 5-2 victory. CP

The Vikings golf team was scheduled to compete Wednesday against Central Carolina Academy at Quail Ridge.

Union Pines volleyball traveled to Gray's Creek Thursday and fell 3-1. CPx

The Vikings soccer team traveled to Jacksonville Friday for the Battle at the Beach, where they suffered a 6-1 loss. CP

Union Pines football opened the Moore County Kickoff Classic Friday against former conference rival Richmond. Although the scrimmage does not count toward the regular-season record, the county kept a running scoreboard throughout the night. Richmond defeated Union Pines 14-0. CPx

Pinecrest

Pinecrest volleyball started the week Tuesday with a strong performance against Cape Fear, sweeping the Colts 3-0. CP

The Patriots soccer team opened its season Wednesday against Laney. Pinecrest dropped the match 3-1. CPx

Volleyball returned to action Thursday against Western Harnett and earned its second sweep of the week, winning 3-0. CP

Pinecrest football closed out the Moore County Kickoff Classic Friday night against Apex Friendship. The Patriots gave Moore County its lone football win of the night, defeating the Patriots of Apex Friendship 28-13. CP

Pinecrest soccer finished its week Saturday at the Battle at the Beach against Swansboro. The Patriots battled to a 1-1 tie. CPx

Sandhills Classical Christian

Sandhills Classical Christian had a busy week on the road.

The volleyball team traveled to Berean Baptist Academy Thursday and picked up a 3-1 victory. CP

SCCS soccer also earned a win Thursday against Berean Baptist Academy, taking the match 4-1. CP

The volleyball team traveled to Christ the Cornerstone Friday and fell 3-1. CPx

Sandhills Classical volleyball was back at Christ the Cornerstone Saturday and again fell 3-1. CPx

The soccer team finished the week Saturday with another win over Berean Baptist Academy, this time taking a close 2-1 victory. CP

Father Capodanno

Father Capodanno cross country competed Thursday at Camp Duncan in Aberdeen.

The football team took the field Friday against Liberty Christian. Father Capodanno fell 26-14. CP

Moore County Kickoff Classic

The fourth annual Moore County Kickoff Classic gave fans their first look at North Moore, Union Pines and Pinecrest before the regular season begins.

Union Pines opened the night against Richmond. Although it doesn't count toward the regular-season record, the county had a running scoreboard throughout the three games. Richmond defeated Union Pines 14-0. CPx

In game two, North Moore took on a bigger Western Harnett team. Despite a last-minute comeback attempt, the Mustangs came up just short, falling 8-6. CP

In the finale, Pinecrest took on Apex Friendship and gave Moore County its only win of the night with a 28-13 victory. CP

With the running scoreboard, everyone defeated Moore County by the slimmest of margins, 35-34.

Curt’s Picks went 2-1 in the Moore County Kickoff Classic and finished the entire week 13-7.
