Bogeys stroll pass Highland Hooligans
The Sandhills Bogeys wasted no time getting ahead — and never let up — in a commanding 14-3 victory over the Laurinburg Highland Hooligans Friday evening at home.
A first-inning burst set the tone, as the Bogeys capitalized on a Hooligans error before Bryce Hubbard’s fielder’s choice and a two-run single by Nolan Hull gave Sandhills a quick 4-0 lead. That early energy only built from there.
Will Moffit kept the momentum rolling in the second with a two-run homer to right field, pushing the lead to 6-0 and electrifying the home crowd. The Bogeys kept applying pressure, adding three more runs in the third behind smart baserunning, a Logan Dyer single, and a Tristan Hunt groundout.
But the big inning came in the fifth, when Sandhills erupted for five runs on just two hits. Walks proved costly for the Hooligans, and the Bogeys made every one count. Noah Strizek worked a bases-loaded walk, Moffit hit a sacrifice fly, Hunt ripped an RBI double, and JD Scarbrough capped the frame with a two-run single.
On the mound, left-hander Jacob Wells kept Laurinburg in check, giving up just two unearned runs over five innings, while striking out three. Moffit also pitched a clean sixth in relief.
At the plate, the Bogeys were efficient and disciplined. Logan Dyer, JD Scarbrough, and Nolan Hull each recorded two hits, while Moffit led the team with three RBIs. The team drew 10 walks, with Strizek, Scarbrough, and Daniel Montana each collecting two.
Defensively, Sandhills turned a crisp double play and kept mistakes to a minimum — a sharp contrast to the early error that helped them build their own lead.
For Laurinburg, Brady Hendrix provided a bright spot with a solo home run in the sixth, while Alfredo Jiménez Jr. drove in two runs and went 1-for-2 from the bottom of the order.
The Bogeys improve their record to 19-8 (12-8) and look to carry that momentum into Saturday’s matchup as they host the Oak Island Loggerheads.
The Loggerheads are in second place in the division one game ahead of the Bogeys. Tonight’s game is important as they enter their last week of regular season play.
